How does your dog smell? Olfactory detection of human bladder cancer

چکیده

Anecdotal evidence has shown that dogs, with their acute sense of smell, might be able to detect cancers in humans by picking up the odour given off by the cancer cells. In the past 15 years, two letters have been published in the Lancet, seemingly describing dogs’ ability to predict the presence of cancer later diagnosed by a doctor. Alongside the anecdotes, good theoretical evidence indicates that dogs at least ought to have such capabilities, because we already know that tumours release volatile organic compounds (or scent chemicals) into the air. Although these compounds are too faint for humans to detect, they could well be within the range of a dog’s olfactory (sense of smell) capabilities. In addition to the theoretical benefits, a clinical motive for investigating the possibility of using dogs to diagnose cancer exists, because interest in volatile compounds as indicators of cancer is growing elsewhere in medicine. The purpose of this study was to test, under rigorous experimental conditions, the idea that dogs might be able to detect cancer through their sense of smell.

Recent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight

The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...

Olfactory disorders: Diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment

The sense of smell, one of the five basic senses that humans have, helps us detect different types of odors. It also plays an important role in the detection of pollutants, toxic gases, or rotten and hazardous foods. Although olfaction is considered less important than the other senses, smell disorders could cause a variety of problems, including reduced taste detection due to the relationship ...

Human olfactory psychophysics

Of all the senses, smell is the least understood. Despite centuries of investigation, science can still offer no satisfying theory for why a particular substance smells the way it does. Nor do we understand in any detail how we are able to distinguish the smell of a peach from that of an apricot, or how a particular smell can trigger longforgotten memories of a distant time or place. Human olfa...

Qualitaty of Olfaction in Patients with Nasal and Sinuses Polyposis before and after Endo-scopic Sinus Surgery in, Vali e Asr Hospital in 2017

Background: Olfaction plays an important role in human life and promotes quality of life through understanding various odors. Nasal polyps are among the common causes of olfactory impairment. There are many different treatment options for polyps most notably the diagnosis and elimination of underlying causes. Some polyps do not respond to medication therapy or they relapse, and therefore requir...

Better smelling through genetics: mammalian odor perception.

The increasing availability of genomic and genetic tools to study olfaction-the sense of smell-has brought important new insights into how this chemosensory modality functions in different species. Newly sequenced mammalian genomes-from platypus to dog-have made it possible to infer how smell has evolved to suit the needs of a given species and how variation within a species may affect individu...
